NEWS!
Table Tennis Results, 2010
Coming off the best showing in state history at the National Senior Games in 2009, we expected great action from the Maryland Senior Olympics table tennis tournament and were not disappointed. We saw familiar champions and new faces emerge at our tournament, held Sept. 25 at the Maryland Table Tennis Association in Eldersburg, Md.

Marylanders went to Nationals last year and captured six medals, including singles gold for Su Feng Liu in men's 70-74 singles, Yvonne Kronlage in women's 70-74 singles, and Barbara Kaminsky in women's 65-69 singles. All won gold this year at the MSO tournament, and it appears the quality of play will once again make Maryland a growing power in national events.

For Ms. Kronlage, winning this year's Maryland qualifier for the 2011 National Games in Houston continued a great two-year stretch of play where she has re-emerged as one of the best national senior players in her age group. The Maryland Senior Olympics Hall of Famer was a silver medalist in the 2005 National Games and gold medalist in singles and doubles in 1999. She has won the Maryland singles title in her age groups each year since 2004.

Like 2008, when he first entered MSO and captured three golds in men's 50-54 competitions, Julian Waters of Gaithersburg again won gold in singles, doubles and mixed doubles. We're hoping to see Mr. Waters representing Maryland in Houston next summer.

The tournament was given some added energy with the arrival and gold medal-winning play of M. Hassein Sharifi (men's 60-64) and Terri Lee Bell (women's 55-59), and silver medal victories by Donna Rogall (women's 50-54) and Steve Hochman (men's 50-54), a regular on the U.S. Open table tennis circuit.

Perhaps the biggest surprise of the tourney was the 50-54 mixed doubles team of Barbara Bitgood/Nelson Smith, silver medalists at the 2009 National Games, finishing fourth and barely qualifying for the 2011 Games.

But some things never change. Henry Kostkowski, of LaPlata, again captured gold in 80-84 and has been his singles age-group champion each year since at least 1998, the earliest date of MSO individual results on file. Mr. Kostkowski was the only singles repeat winner from 2009.
