Badminton Results 2008
The remnants of tropical storm Hanna did not deter the badminton participants as many familiar faces and champions gathered at the Germantown Community Center Sept. 6-7 for the 2008 Maryland Senior Olympics competition.
The news of the day was the new winners in the 50-54 age groups and continued success by long-running champs Samuel Kahn and Jacob Anchant. Kahn won his fifth singles title, Anchant his sixth. Ronney Choong continued his decade-long success by moving up to the 60-64 age group and winning gold, his sixth singles title and defeating 2006 age group champ David Simpson.
The biggest upset came when 2006 gold medalist Richard Shingles was defeated by Michael Bukriusky in the 50-54 age group. Shingles did win doubles with Jong-Herng Sing.
There was also a new champ in the women's 50-54 with Li Mills winning gold as 2006 champ Diane Bohr moved up an age group and finished with a silver behind Fuziah Ayub-O'Neill.
Rui Yi Yu repeated as women's 60-64 gold medalist, and won a doubles gold with Carolyn Barker, who claimed her foruth doubles title and second mixed crown when she paired with Anchant.
It was also great to see long-time participants and former champs Darrell Dempster, Bernard Shannon and Henry Dahlen again.
