National-Quality Play at Badminton Tourney
This year's MSO badminton tournament featured national-quality play among the women as four groups that participated in the 2009 National Senior Games qualified for the 2011 Games Sept. 11 at Bauer Drive Community Centerin Rockville.

Diane Bohr of Ellicott City, moved up an age grouo and captured the women's 60-64 age-group singles gold. She finished 6th nationally in 2009 and second in doubles with Fuzian Ayub-O'Niell. Ms. O'Neill did not participate in Maryland this year, but Mrs. Bohr paired with Joanne Clement of Arlington, Va., for the doubles crown and husband Will Bohr for mixed doubles.

Sandy Vary of Cockeysville, 5th nationally in women's 50-54 singles, took gold in Maryland singles and again with her doubles partner, Bao-Tuan Sing of Rockville. They were 4th nationally in 2009.

The most competitive event of the day, 50-54 mixed doubles, saw Vary and Richard Shingles of Clumbia defeat Linda Wheatley of Timonium and regular mixed-doubles partner Jin-Chuang Hsu of Columbia for the gold. The Wheatley/Hsu pairing was 5th at last year's national tournament.

In men's play, Pravit Choong returned to the gold medal podium as the long-time participant captured his first singles title since 2006. In a very competitive 65-69 age group, Mr. Choonit, of Germantown, defeated anothor veteran MSO champion, David Simpson of Frederick, for his fourth Maryland title. Mr. Choonit also captured gold in 2003 and 2001.

Ronney Choong won his eighth MSO singles championship by capturing the men's 60-64 group, defeating Scott Roberts of Germantown. Mr. Choong then paired with Shean Wu in doubles once again this year and took gold by defeating Mr. Simpson and Roger Leung. Choong/Wu also paired for gold in 2004, 2006, 2008 and 2009.

Some of the best action came between gold medalist Shankar Matha of Boyds and runnerup Daryl Jones of Palmyra, Pa., in men's 50-54. Harry Bernat was back, uncontested in 85-89, but played through and claimed his fifth MSO gold.
