Cycling Time Trials Qualify 15 for National Games
Congratulations to all the Maryland Senior Olympics cyclists who participated in the MSO time trials at Church Creek on Aug. 9. Fifteen Marylanders posted first or second in their age groups of the 5k (3.1 miles) and 10k (6.2 miles) distances, thus qualifying for the 2009 National Senior Games in San Francisco.

Additionally, five new Maryland Senior Olympics cycling records were set. Russell Loy posted new record times in the 5k and 10k races for the men's 65-69 age group. Susan Sarubin set new marks for women 50-54 in the 5k and 10k races. William Neumann also established a new record in the men's 55-59 5k.

Eight of the racers—Loy, John Proper, Charles Peddicord, Nick Libernini, James O’Brien, Dalmutha Dammons, Michael Fitzsimmons and David Gordon—are repeat qualifiers from the 2006 Maryland Senior Olympics.

New qualifiers since are Neumann, Bob Brown (5k and 10k races), Susan Sarubin (both races), Luette Semmes, Dona Deutsch, Thomas Swartz (both races) and Murray Sarubin (both races).

Loy's time of 8:07.22.17 in the men's 65-69 5k bested John Elliott's mark of 8:18 set in 2006. Loy's 15:50.22.7 time in the 65-69 10k smashed Charles Archer's 1996 record of 17:12.

Susan Sarubin had an awesome time trials, racing the women's 50-54 5k in 8:38.20.86, beating Jeanie Gunter's 2006 mark of 9:30. Sarubin then raced a 16:50.22.7 in the 10k, shattering Sandra Buck's 1998 mark of 18:09.

Neumann's 7:45.23.24 in the men's 55-59 5k topped Bill Vogler's previous record of 7:46 set in 2000.

Special thanks to sponsor Team Latitude-ABRT for hosting this event, including adding the Senior Olympics qualifiers to an already full day of competition. Team Latitude treated the Seniors Olympics great and also voluntarily arranged such significant amenities as MSO-only parking a few yards from the start.

Also: Don Riggs, our MSO cycling coordinator, plans to establish an e-group for Maryland Senior Olympics cyclists. The e-group will be a means of requesting and communicating information about local and regional cycling events and activities.

Please send the name and e-mail addresses of others who wish to be included in the e-group to donriggs@juno.com. After the group is established, persons will be able to self-enroll or enroll by e-mailing Mr. Riggs.
