Suckling, Aasen Set High 5k Benchmarks
As if holding four Maryland Senior Olympics track running records over the past two years weren't enough, Alison Suckling, 56, of Arnold, blew away the competition in the MSO 5k run held as part of the Kentlands/Lakeslands 5k Sept. 3 in Gaithersburg.

Ms. Arnold clocked a 21:09 time, beating runnerup Marcia Rosenberg, 55, of Gaithersburg by 3 minutes, 39 seconds. Ms. Arnold's time also shattered the MSO age-group record of 21:15 set in 1990 by Joanne Mallet, one of the oldest records still remaining in our history. Ms. Arnold now owns records in the 400, 800, 1,500, 5k and 10k that had been on our records a combined 98 years.

The other record went to Yvonne Aasen, 80, of Westminster. Ms. Aasen is no stranger to MSO long-distance records in the 5k and 10k, and by bumping up an age group she set the new benchmark at 36:30, easily beating Martha Trimmer's 48:50 from a year.

For Alice Franks, 63, of Rockville, this was her third straight age-group vicory. Her 25:07 time was 17 seconds slower than a year ago. Likewise, Nianxiang Xie, 84, won his fourth straight group competition but his 36:09 was almost 8 minutes slower than a year ago.

Overall times were much slower this year and the meet was without some of MSO's best all-time long-distance runners, including John Elliott (70-74), Jeannie Pizzonia (70-74) and Tami Graf (70-74). The best race was men's 55-59, where Thomas Offenbacher, 55, Rockville, defeated Dan Lawson, 55, of Gaithersburg, with a 17:46 time, nine seconds ahead.
