2011 MSO Winter Games Are a Big Hit
The 2011 Maryland Senior Olympics Winter Games, held Feb. 12 at the Gardens Ice House in Laurel, had a big turnout of 52 players on the ice as four teams played hockey and 12 players tried their hand at curling.

It was a fun afternoon as the spectrum of participants ranged from retired pros to spry rink rats. The oldest player was 80 years old. They all played for three fast-paced hours and even the allure of free pizza and beer couldn’t get them to stop. Well, maybe.

In the Elite Division, the Red team took the gold medal against the Gold team by splitting two games but having an 11-8 combined score advantage. In the Recreation Division, the Gold team took the gold medal against Red with a 10-4 aggregate score after splitting a pair of games.

Of particular note was the curling. The main purpose of this event was to introduce players to the sport. The effort was well-received with instruction and a game. This was thoroughly enjoyed by instructors and players. Curling is a great activity for seniors as it requires great concentration as well as stretching movements.

Many thanks to the wives, who did a great job managing the curling event. The referees and scorekeepers for both sports were also volunteers.

Special thanks to the Buckleitners for arranging the afternoon of fun and competition, and once again doing a great job of promoting the Maryland Senior Olympics. We also appreciate all the nice folks at the Gardens Ice House for being great hosts again this year.
