2011 National Senior Games Updates
Follow the contingent of Maryland Senior Olympians competing at the National Games in Houston by following this updater throughout the event:

Tennis, July 6—Tennis results at the National Senior Games were a nightmare to unscramble because we had to search for each of Maryland's 28 participants instead of a simple search by state. We might have missed someone, but we "believe" we have two gold medalists: Eyup Tanman (M85 singles) of Cambridge in a 6-4, 6-4 victory against Lee Smith (Texas) and James and Jennifer Murduck (50-54) of Columbia in mixed doubles. Elizabeth Anthony (W85) of Sykesville was a silver medalist in singles and Ms. Murduck-Hedy Brandt (W50) of Ellicott City in doubles. Mr. Murduck-Taylor Clifford (M50) of Woodstock brought home bronze in doubles. Fourth-place finishers were Chandra Sekhar (M70, Montgomery Village) in singles; Sekhar-George Vetticad (Gaithersburg) in M70 doubles; Shirley Boudreau (Bethesda)-Jean Restuccia (Rockville) in W65 doubles; and Restuccia-Don Tomb (Virginia) in 65 mixed doubles.

Racquetball, June 30—Excellent job in Houston by our contingent of 12 racquetballers in a very competitive Nationals field. The doubles team of Peter McCuster (Hanover)-Joel Wexler (Odenton) in M60 took silver for MSO's highest finish. Earnest Matthews (M60) of Upper Marlboro defeated Jerry Eisner of Rockville for bronze in Maryland's top finish in singles. Amio Hill Jr. (M70), Harry Seymour (M65) and Teresa Daniels (W55) took 4th place in singles; Mr. Seymour teamed with Frank Martin of Silver Spring for 4th in doubles.

Swimming, June 28—Jill Coleman (W80) of Owings Mills took to the water again and captured more gold medals, easily winning the 100 IM (2:00.90) and 200 backstroke (3:58.95). That’s four swimming golds for Ms. Coleman. Yu-Jin Lee (M75) of Arnold finished 4th in the 200 back. Carolynn Foley (W65) of Harwood was 5th in the 200 back and 6th in 100 freestyle.

Swimming, June 27—More medals from our swimmers as Jill Coleman (W80) of Owings Mills won gold in the 200 IM and 50-yard backstroke. Ms. Coleman clocked a 52.43 in the 50 back, almost 2 seconds better than her Maryland record set last year. Parkville's Mauritz Anderson (M90) took silver in the 100-yard breaststroke and Yu-Jin Lee (M75) of Arnold claimed bronze in the 50 back.

Racewalking, June 26—Very nice effort by our racewalkers at Nationals. John Gersh (M60) of Columbia finished 4th in the 1,500-meter and 5th in the 5k, missing bronze in the 1,500 by 20 seconds. Sheldon Contract (M70) of Bethesda was 5th in the 1,500, just 10 seconds behind for bronze, and 6th in 5k. Terry Copeland (M70) of Frederick was 10th in the 5k.

Running, June 26—Just another run on the blacktop for Tami Graf (W75) of Lusby at Nationals. She added silver medals in the 5k and 10k runs to the silver she won in the 1,500-meter run and bronze in the 400-meter dash. Gretchen Bolton (W65) of Bethesda captured silver in the 10k with a nice 1:00.04 run.

Swimming, June 26—Day 3 of the National Senior Games swim meet brought more gold and accolades for our Elizabeth Hogan (W55), who set her fourth NSG record with a 1:11.44 in the 100 backstroke. Ms. Hogan appeared to have a fifth new record with a 6:17.72 in the 500 freestyle, but Elaine Valdez of Texas shattered the 2001 standard by 20 seconds with a 6:05.43, handing Liz a silver medal.

Shuffleboard, June 26—The medals keep piling up for Maryland at the National Senior Games as Beth Wheeler (W55) of Gaithersburg captured gold in the shuffleboard singles and teamed with Doreene Morgan (W50) of California for bronze in doubles.

Volleyball, June 26—Frederick VBC (M50) defeated the Texas Stars for gold and Maryland MAC Magic (M70) tripped rival Maryland Mac 70 to take gold and silver, respectively.

Swimming, June 25—What a performance to open the Nationals swim meet by Upper Marlboro's Elizabeth Hogan (W55). Ms. Hogan obliterated three NSG records—100 butterfly (1:07.64), 200 backstroke (2:45.72) and 200 IM (2:38.05). She cut 7 seconds off the 100 butterfly record set in 2009, 10 seconds off the 200 backstroke set in 2003, and 10 seconds off the 200 IM mark established in 2001. Kathleen Capron (W50) of Mt. Airy took bronze in the 50 butterfly with a 32.12 time.

Golf, June 25—Tip of the cap to the awesome Mary Lauffer, 92, of Annapolis for her gold medal (W90) at the National Senior Games. Mary shot a 27-hole 175 as the only competitor in her age group. Peter Chen (M85) of Mechanicsville captured silver with a three-day 243, 7 off the pace, and Severn's Bob Burkhart (M75) tied for 20th with a 248.

Golf, June 24—Congratulations to Karen Smith (W65) of Chestertown for her third consecutive golf age-group gold medal at Nationals. Karen shot a three-day 247 to win by 7 shots. Ms. Smith also captured gold in 2009 at Palo Alto and 2007 in Louisville. Bowie's Carolyn Hudson and Crofton's Karen Wood tied for bronze at 261 in the same age group. Mary Lauffer (W90) of Annapolis shot a 27-hole 175 as the only competitor in her age group and a gold medal. We have no question Ms. Lauffer would have whupped all-comers anyhow. Peter Chen (M85) of Mechanicsville captured silver with a three-day 243, 7 off the pace, and Severn's Bob Burkhart (M75) tied for 20th with a 248.

Archery, June 24—Another great National Senior Games for our archers! Richard Paschke (M65) of Timonium won his 3rd straight NSG gold in recurve. Knoxville's Tom Coblentz (M60) scored 1,788 in compound release, breaking the NSG record of 1,750 by our own Larry Hix in 1999. Gail Peterson (W55) of Hanover and Ray May (M70) of Middletown took silver in compound release. Ron Thompson (M70) of Crownsville took bronze in barebow.

Track and Field, June 24—Upset in the 400-meter as 2009 national champion and recordholder Audrey Lary (W75) finished with a silver, losing to Jean Daprano of Georgia. Ms. Daprano's 1:29.95 time was short of Ms. Lary's record of 1:25.50, but still easily outpaced her 1:36.70 in Houston.

Track and Field, June 24—Another excellent meet for Maryland's Tami Graf (W75) of Lusby as she captured a silver in the 1,500-meter run and bronze in the 400-meter. Likewise, Nancy Berger (W65) took bronze medals in the same events.

Track and Field, June 23—Big week continues far for MSO athletes. Congrats to Audrey Lary (W75) for gold meals in 100-meter, long jump and triple jump; Oscar Peyton (M55) in 100- and 200-meters; Shirley Geisbert (W55) in shot put; and Alby Williams (M75) in 100-meters.

Table Tennis, June 22—Nine medals for MSO, including gold by the M50 doubles team of Steve Hochman (Westminster)-Jeff Smart (Columbia) and W85 duo of Elizabeth Anthony (Sykesville)-Betty Kostkowski (LaPlata). Ms. Kostkowski teamed with husband Henry for silver in mixed 85 doubles. Singles silver went to Hochman and Su Liu (Potomac, M75). Doubles silver went to Jeff and Yvonne Smart in 50 mixed, and Ms. Smart with Terri Bell in W50. Ms. Bell and Ms. Smart also had bronze in singles. Great effort, great haul of medals.

Men's Basketball, June 19—Oh-so-close for the Baby Boomers from Prince George's. They reached the M50 Flight B championship game at Nationals before falling, 69-52, to Konica Minolta of Minnesota. Great job by Buddy Mercer, George Pruden, Jimmie Brown, Darryl Davis, Clifford Jones, Harold Russell and Ronnie Stokes for a great run from MSO to Houston.
