Shuffleboarders Brave the Elements
The 2008 shuffleboard competition held Sept. 6 was hampered by the affects of tropical storm Hannah drenching the mid-Atlantic the night and early morning before the competition. Several participants could not make the trip to the Leisure World courts in Silver Spring, but that did not stop many diehards from getting into action once the weather cleared.

There were new champions in all men's singles categories and repeat champs in five of the women's age groups. The day was led by long-running champs Susan Habig of Laurel and Catherine Quigley of Silver Spring. Mrs. Quigley repeated as gold medalist in the women's 85-89 age group for the third time while also capturing doubles with partner Laura Rosfeld, also of Silver Spring, for the fifth time.

Mrs. Quigley's domination of the 75-79, 80-84 and now 85-89 age groups date to 1999. She has seven singles titles, along with 12 lawn bowling titles, two billiards gold medals, plus a silver for the football throw in 1999, among others.

The Senior Olympics legacy of Mrs. Habig, 64, was certainly embellished. Dating to 1998, she now has seven golds in shuffleboard singles in age groups 50-54, 50-59 and 60-64. Add three doubles golds, along with a gold in 10-pin bowling, volleyball, two singles and a doubles gold in table tennis, plus four golds in lawn bowling singles, two in doubles and three silvers, and that's a fairly hefty trophy case.

Other singles winners in shuffleboard were Beth Wheeler (50-54), Gloria Hong (65-69) and Paricia Patton moving up to 75-79.

In men’s play, Bert Conger of Kensington moved up to the 75-79 age group and captured gold in the most competitive age group of the shuffleboard events. He also teamed with John Supinski of Silver Spring for gold in the doubles.

For Mr. Conger, it was the beginning of yet another successful Maryland Senior Olympics. Since 1999, he's won shuffleboard gold three times in singles with four silvers; three doubles titles and a mixed doubles gold. He's also been gold medalist in lawn bowling six times and won gold medals in softball, volleyball, basketball and foul shooting.

Another competitive age group was the men's 80-84, where Bill Herndon of Silver Spring, leaped over John Supinski from 2006 for the gold medal. Emory Patton moved up an age group and finished third.

And Gloria Hong of Rockville continued her impressive resume at the Senior Olympics. She was unchallenged for defending her gold in shuffleboard singles 65-69, but she and George Izumi stepped up to gold in doubles after getting silver in 2006. She's also won gold medals in lawn bowling, horseshoes, Frisbee throw, basketball and foul shooting.
