More Shuffleboard Gold For Familiar Faces
Beth Wheeler of Gaithersburg, Joyce Durbin of Baltimore, Susan Habig of Laurel and George Izumi of Rockville, participants in the 2009 National Senior Games, posted easy gold medal victories to qualify for the 2011 Games in Houston.
Ms. Wheeler, who was a National silver medalist in 50-54 last year, was uncontested and has taken gold each year she's entered since 2006. Ms. Durbin, also a silver medalist at the National Games after finishing with bronze in Maryland in 2008, was uncontested at women's 85-89.
Ms. Habig, also uncontested, now has eight golds in singles since 1998 and she added her fourth doubles gold when she teamed with Dorothy Jarboe of Charlotte Hall.
There were a couple of fun twists as 2008 gold medalist Gloria Hong moved up to women's 70-74 and was defeated by Lois Scheminant of Edgewater. Since 2005, the two have competed head-to-head three times at MSO with Ms. Scheminant now winning twice.
Of course, that meant they would meet in doubles, where Ms. Hong exacted a little revenge by teaming with Mr. Izumi for the gold against Ms. Scheminant and Hy Levasseur of Edgewater.
Mr. Izumi, who was seventh at the 2009 National Games, won the men's 70-74 gold for the second straight qualifying year. Dean Henry of Silver Spring made his first appearnce since 2006 to take gold in 85-89.
In doubles, Anthony Anastasi of Silver Spring and Jim Kline of Derwood moved up to win gold and hand Patricia and Emory Patton of Silver Spring silver for the second straight qualifying year.
