Men's and Women's Softball Results, 2010
The MSO softball tournament featured 18 men's and women's teams that played Sept. 10-11 at Olney Manor Regional Park. Eight of the teams were uncontested in their age groups, but great weather and game action accompanied the tourney, especially in the men's 65-69 and 70-74 divisions. In the end, we saw familiar faces and teams winning medals and the right to play at the 2011 National Senior Games in Houston.
The lone real upset came in the men's 70-74 divison, where the Bowie 70s, silver medalists at the 2009 National Games, finished second behind the Cloverly Cannons. They played a thrilling gold medal series with each team winning a game by a comfortable score. Then, for the gold, the Cannons escaped with a nail-biting 6-5 victory.
Otherwise, the Spicers again powered their way through the 60-64 age group and Hamel picked up three medals with three teams participating. The Oldimpians, one of the best softball nicknames ever, won the 60-64 Silver Division gold by defeating a team from Washington, D.C., in two straight games.
In the Silver Division of men's 65-69, Montgomery RB (for coach Ron Bird) took gold and paired against Montgomery RK (for coach Marshall Kramer) and St. Mary's for a good competition, especially with Gold Division champ Jimmy's Sluggers in the age group. Montgomery RB won the gold-medla game, 14-12, against Montgomery MK. Hopefully, we'll see all those teams make the trip to Houston.
