Smaller Field, but Some Familiar Results
This year's MSO tennis tournament was scattered by cold, rainy weather and a lower turnout in a non-qualifying year. But that did not deter the enjoyment and developing storylines, chiefly for Cathie Morrison and Al Wigmore.

Ms. Morrsion's gold medal in the women's 60-64 age group is a bit of redemption for a third-place last year in the qualifying for the National Senior Games. She has now won gold in her age group five of the last seven MSO events.

Mr. Wigmore captured his fourth straight gold by defeating James Harbaugh of Greenbelt, 6-1, 6-2 as the cold front was bearing down on the second day of play. This was a far quicker match than last year's championship, when Mr. Wigmore and Merr Trumbore battled for more than two grueling hours as nigthfall approached.

Donald Irons of Linthicum jumped to the 80-84 age group and now holds gold medals in 70-74 and 75-79. Loyce Pailen of Beltsville took her fourth gold this decade and first since 2006, this one in women's singles 55-59.

Of the 54 MSO participants, 10 played at the National Senior Games and all won at least one medal at MSO this year.

Tennis Results 2009
Age group medalists from the 2009 MSO tennis tournament held Sept. 25-26 at Olney Manor Regional Park and Sept. 27 at Quince Orchard Tennis Center. All matches are best-of-3 sets with the third set being a 10-point pro set. You'll see scores such as 6-4, 3-6, 1-0 (10-6), indicating the winner won the third set by 10 points to 6.

Also, if there is no bronze medal winner listed or no bronze medal match to be played, that means only final rounds were played in that age group.
